DC Bocce Introduces Fall Ball!

DC Bocce is excited to announce the opening of a Fall Season! The Fall Season will take place indoors at both the American Legion and the Pour House (sans furniture) on Capitol Hill. Games will be played Wednesday nights on smaller indoor courts with field turf. We'll be using light-weight bocce balls so no harm will come to the premises or the players next to you. Since we'll be playing inside, there will never be daylight or weather issues…and you can play and drink at the same time without fear of the park police!

Registration will open this Monday, 9/28 at 10:00am and is done on a first come first serve basis. Teams must have a minimum of 4 players with a maximum of 6. If you register by Friday, 10/1, the cost will be $35 per person. After that, the fee will go up to $40. Game times will vary between 6:30pm–8:45pm with games played to 16 points. The captain's meeting will be held at the American Legion on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, 10/14, and the first week of play will follow on Wednesday, 10/21. There will be 5 weeks of regular season play followed by 3 weeks of playoffs. The season will end with a party at the Pour House on 12/16. We will play every week with the exception of Wednesday, 11/25, which is the night before Thanksgiving. The official season schedule can be found on the Registration page.

So get your friends together and come out and enjoy bocce from the comforts of the bar!

New Volunteer Opportunity ~ Partnering with the American Legion

Check out the info below on volunteering to be a greeter to WWII Vets arriving to the DC area.  You may contact Alicia directly, or contact me at rachael@dcbocce.com to coordinate signing up.  The first opportunity is THIS SATURDAY at 9:15AM but there are opportunities throughout the fall.  Maybe we can get a group together for one weekend and grab lunch before or after.

From the Legion:

Honor Flights bring WWII Veterans to DC to visit the WWII Memorial on the Mall.  Volunteers are needed to welcome these heroes to Washington.  We have the opportunity to be a part of the Airport Greeters, who greet the arrival of the Honor Flight at the airport.  There is a band, balloons and we clap and cheer as they get off the plane.
There will be flights coming in every weekend throughout the fall.  They arrive at all airports but we are focusing on the the flights that arrive at National Airport (DCA) for ease of transportation.  The next flight is this Saturday, 9/12 at 9:15 AM.
If you are able to assist in this effort, pleae email me at afansmith@gmail.com.  I will be compiling the list to send out so that your gate passes can be arranged.   Please send the name as it matches your ID by NOON on Friday at the latest.  We must have this information in advance so please let me know if you can attend.
Please note that this is NOT a Legion-specific event.  You do NOT have to be a member of the American Legion or related orgs to participate so feel free to forward this email to your friends.  In fact, the more, the merrier!
This is a fantastic opportunity to thank those of the Greatest Generation.  Please let me know if you can make it on the 12th.

9/11 Day of Service

We would like to invite all league member to participate in the First Annual 9/11 Day of Service in the District. The concept is simple, to transform a day of sorrow into a day of service. The event is being organized by a great local non-profit, Greater DC Cares.

We are planning on doing a 2-4 hour project on Friday September 11th. The organization charges $25 to register, which goes to support their various charities, is tax deductible, and will earn you a free t-shirt. I will pick the specific project early next week, based on the number of registration we have at that time. The project will be inside the district.

This is a fun & easy way to be a positive force in the community. I hope you will join us, and feel free to bring both bocce and non bocce friends too!
